Year 11 Challenge students conquer the Waitakere Ranges

Last week a group of 14 boys from the Year 11 Challenge class took part in a two day hike in the Waitakere Ranges.

The Challenge Course is designed to develop well-rounded young men who fully participate in school life and who realise their full potential. The course challenges boys to be the best they can be across a number of areas, and includes a mixture of academic and outdoor education Achievement and Unit Standards.

The boys hiked around the Whatipu area and camped in the picturesque Pararaha Valley. The area has only recently opened again after several years of closure due to Kauri dieback disease. The boys enjoyed breath taking views from the peaks and hiked steep terrain over two days, covering 25 km. Despite cold conditions the boys set up tents and carried and cooked their own meals.

The hike was very successful and the boys will complete further day and overnight hikes throughout the year as they work toward Camping and Tramping Unit Standards gained through a partnership with Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT).
