Year 11 Challenge class tackle the Hunua Ranges
Posted on May 31, 2021
Recently a group of twelve boys from the Year 11 Challenge class took part in a two-day hike in the Hunua Ranges.
The Challenge Course is designed to develop well-rounded young men who fully participate in school life and who realise their full potential. The course challenges boys to be the best they can be across a number of areas, and includes a mixture of academic and outdoor education Achievement and Unit standards.
This is the third hike the boys have undertaken this year. They plan and prepare for each expedition which involves gear selection, menu preparation and cooking, hazard and safety assessments, and a high level of fitness.
The boys completed 24 km on their recent hike, completing the Upper Mangatāwhiri Loop track and tenting at Piggott’s Hut campsite. Despite heavy rain and steep terrain the boys completed the hike in good spirits.
Thanks to Steve Maserow of Barfoot & Thompson Howick who has generously sponsored the course this year and helped with purchasing outdoor equipment.
