Wellington Design and Technology trip

On July 24th Mr Hey and Mr Norris took a class of 23 Year 13 A Level Design and Technology students to Wellington for an educational trip to learn about professional model making processes in the film industry.
The students visited the Weta Workshop studios and attended The Great War Exhibition at Te Papa, gaining valuable experience to later apply to their own models for their coursework.
They visited the Pukeahu National War Memorial Park first and learnt about the design process of the exhibition and models on display to gain insight on the careful planning that went into the construction of the exhibition, designed by Sir Peter Jackson.
Next they visited Weta Workshop and split into two groups to go on a tour of the miniatures in the popular TV show: Thunderbirds Are Go and a guided Weta Cave Workshop Behind the Scenes Tour. Their trip was awe-inspiring seeing the incredible detail of the models. The students learnt the tips and tricks of the film making trade and as a result understood that in the model making industry, “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure”.
The trip provided the students with a first-hand encounter with one of the best special effects and movie design companies in the world. The insight and knowledge gained was invaluable to the students so early in their design careers.
