Valiant effort at New Zealand Squash Championships
Posted on August 09, 2022
On Friday 5 August, Macleans College took two teams to the New Zealand Secondary Schools Squash Championships on the North Shore.
Forty-six teams of five students from across New Zealand took part in this national competition. Both Macleans College teams fought with determination during the three-day event.
The boys’ team lost to Auckland Grammar School 1 (seed 3), New Plymouth Boys High School (seed 19) and Mt Albert Grammar School (seed 27) in the first two days of the tournament. They fought back to beat St Peter’s Cambridge (seed 31), and Christchurch Boys’ High School 2 (seed 29) to secure a final ranking position of 29 out of 32.
The girls’ team lost to Whangarei Girls’ High School (seed 3), Epsom Girls Grammar School (seed 10) and Ruapehu College (seed 11) in the first two days of the competition. On the last day, the girls beat St Paul's Collegiate School Hamilton to secure a ranking position of 13 out of 14.
Overall, it was a wonderful experience for both teams, and the students played valiantly for three days. Participation in the New Zealand Squash Championships has inspired many students to train harder and develop their squash skills for next year.
