On Thursday 6 May 2021, Upham House held their annual ANZAC Service Assembly.

Invited guests included Major James Hannah and immediate past president of the Howick RSA Mr Mike Cole. Amanda Upham used to attend the Upham House ANZAC services in person until her death in 2017. Major James Hannah accompanied her to these services. Major Hannah’s father, Dr James Bradshaw Hannah, and Charles Upham were prisoners of war together. Dr Hannah, a medic, attended to Charles Upham after he was wounded. At the Macleans College Senior Prizegiving, the Upham-Hannah Scholarship is presented.

Also in attendance was Chair of the Howick RSA Mr Leo Abbott, Howick Local Board Chairperson Ms Adele White, Sergeant Callie Lucas from the Royal New Zealand Air Force, Chairman of Macleans College Board Mr Richard Wilkie, Principal Mr Steven Hargreaves, former House Leader Mrs Sue Rivalland, and the school Head Prefects.

In the assembly, the brave men and women who fought in World War I and other conflicts of the twentieth century were remembered. It gave the students the opportunity to learn about and remember New Zealand’s national heroes.
