Nine students travelled to Palmerston North to represent Macleans College at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Table Tennis Tournament.
Bronze medals were achieved by both the Open Grade B team and the Girls Grade team. Congratulations to team members Leo Mamedov (Kupe), Lucas Xiao (Rutherford), Ayan Shah (Upham), Angela Zhang (Mansfield), Jessica Huang (Hillary) and Fiona Ling (Rutherford).
The Open Grade A team of Toby Xu (Kupe House), Gordon Lee (Rutherford) and Felix Chen (Batten) progressed through to the quarter finals where they were knocked out.
Toby Xu was the star of the individual competition. He won his U19 group easily, placing him in the quarter final against the number two seed (Toby was seeded seven). After the full five sets Toby came out victorious. In the semi final Toby faced the sixth seed - and again he won. Toby lost the final against a very highly rated competitor from Selwyn College, who has beaten every player in New Zealand, regardless of age. Toby was very happy with a silver medal.
In the U19 girls competition, Angela Zhang also played very well to come away with her second bronze medal for the tournament.
Josephine Chong (Upham) could not make the New Zealand Secondary Schools Table Tennis Tournament due to competing overseas. She was part of the New Zealand Youth team participating in the Oceania Championships in Melbourne. Josephine did extremely well, winning gold as a member of the U15 girls team and silver in the U15 individuals competition.
