Tongariro National Park explored by student geographers

A group of 27 Year 12 Geography students, accompanied by Mrs Glasgow-Palmer, Mr Hamilton and Mr Mackenzie, recently travelled to Tongariro National Park, located in the central North Island.

The Tongariro National Park is home to Mount Nguaruhoe, Mount Tongariro and Mount Ruapehu. These three volcanoes create the Tongariro volcanic zone.

Mount Ruapehu provided an epic snow-covered backdrop as students moved around the mountain using geographic equipment such as anemometers and inclinometers to collect data on vegetation and climate for their Level 2 Geography internal assessment.

A night was spent at Pipers Lodge in National Park. The lodge warmed everyone up with a roaring fire, delicious meals and a Netflix movie. The following morning the students’ educational fieldwork around the mountain continued and lunch was had at Lake Taupo before heading back to Macleans College.

The two day trip proved to be successful, with students collecting a vast range of interesting geographic data.
