Third place at Spanish Debating Competition

Posted on July 08, 2021

On Friday 2 July, nine Macleans College students travelled to Rangitoto College to compete in the annual Spanish Debating Competition organised by the Spanish Teachers’ Association of New Zealand.

Macleans College entered three teams, one senior (Year 12 and 13) team and two junior (Year 11) teams.

The moots broached a range of issues, such as “Art and Music should not be taught in school” to “New Zealand should once again open its borders”. Competition was tough, with teams only being given the moot 30 minutes before each debate. The teams needed to construct their own arguments, as well as listen to the opposing team in order to generate rebuttal - this is no small feat given that students are debating in a language which is not their mother tongue.

All teams performed well and found the day to be enjoyable and educational. The Macleans College Year 11 team of Luiza Possamai (Batten House), Zoë Barrett (Upham) and Oscar Boehme (Batten) is to be congratulated on gaining third place in the Junior section of the competition.
