Team and Individual Awards at 2017 Fencing North Secondary Schools Championships

On Saturday June 24, the Macleans College Fencing Team took part in the Fencing North Secondary School Individual Championships.
After two months of seeding competitions, the finals event took place with over 100 fencers from the upper North Island competing in direct elimination matches.
The morning started with the Sabre competition, and true to prior form, the Macleans College Sabreurs dominated the event, taking out five of the top six places including; Thomas Ye, 11FISU, 6th; Rayman Tang 11VANR, 5th; Nelson Lee 11WOLS, 3rd=; Kevin Hou, 11FISU, 2nd and Michael Purcell, 13ROOK, 1st. This was a great start to accumulating points for the overall school prize for top male fencers.
Later on in the morning the Men’s Foil competition started and once again Macleans Fencers were successful. They took out eight of the top twenty places including three of the top ten places. Michael Purcell finished 3rd= overall and with Finn Holt, 15FENM, coming 5th, combined with the points from the morning Sabre competition, secured the Top Boys School prize for the first time for Macleans College.
Later in the afternoon it was time for the Women’s Foil competition. Amy Skidmore, 11VANR, was the top placed Macleans fencer coming 12th.
The day was rounded out with the awarding of the Shield for School Sportsmanship and for the second year running Macleans College was awarded this prize.
The team now switch their attention to the upcoming Fencing North Secondary Schools Teams competition which takes place over three weekends in August.
