Students Visit Landcare Research

During the recent holidays a group of motivated Macleans College students visited Landcare Research to see some real science in action.

They were welcomed by Dr Peter Buchanan a world expert on Fungi.

The tour included fungal and arthropod (insect) collections from giant puffball fungi and massive weta to minute specimens that can only be seen through the lens of a microscope.

They were also treated to time in the laboratories with dedicated scientists who explained the role of Landcare Research in identifying native and introduced species in order to protect New Zealand’s unique ecosystems.

A visit to the molecular biology laboratory introduced the students to cutting edge DNA sequencing which is vital to identifying and tracing species whether they be wanted or unwanted on our shores.
