Macleans College students share their Japanese exchange experience

Posted on October 22, 2024

Two Year 11 Macleans College students have recently returned from a fortnight’s exchange to Ashiya Gakuen High School in Osaka, Japan.

Willson Wang (Hillary House) explained that his initial nervousness was quickly overshadowed by sheer excitement to make the most out of his time in Japan. Willson found both staff and students at Ashiya Gakuen High School to be incredibly kind, respectful and welcoming - even giving him a standing ovation after announcing ‘よろしくお願いします’ (I look forward to working with you).

Willson enjoyed learning about Japanese culture and school life, as well as rapidly improving his Japanese listening and speaking skills. He particularly valued being able to take part in the sports day, an event similar to Athletics Day at Macleans College, which provided a day of fun alongside his new classmates and teachers.

He formed many friendships and made some lasting memories. Willson looks forward to returning to Japan in the future.

Salvador Vantacich (Batten) described his time in Japan as a life-changing experience. He stayed with a Japanese host family for the duration of his exchange, which allowed him to fully embrace and enjoy the Japanese culture.

Salvador’s experience at Ashiya Gakuen High School was that it was exceptionally well-structured and organised. He highlighted the friendly students who didn’t hesitate to help Salvador with his Japanese and guide him around the school.

After school, Salvador had the opportunity to explore tourist attractions such as Kiyomizu-dera buddhist temple and Universal Studios theme park. Salvador explained that while the trip certainly improved his Japanese skills, it also deepened his appreciation for the culture of Japan.

Willson and Salvador would like to thank Macleans College for supporting this exchange, particularly Mrs Hoshino for her organisation of the trip. Also thank you to Ashiya Gakuen High School and the host families for their hospitality.
