Students connect with history at Tiritiri Matangi

On Friday 1 April, a group of five students travelled to Tiritiri Matangi following the settlement of the motu to connect with the Ngāi Tai iwi, whenua and history of the land.

The trip, transportation and lunch were provided for the schools and other visitors by the iwi in an effort to educate the public on the effects of the Crown and land claims in New Zealand.

An early morning drive, ferry and walk led to the base of the island, collecting lunch and being informed of the trails on the island. The students eventually reached the lighthouse, which was the final destination before departing back to the mainland.

The day was one full of walking as they explored the island, encountering and photographing the native birds, and learning about the history of the whenua. The trails were often rocky and uneven, as well as following steep terrain on a very sunny day, resulting in tired and fulfilled students.
