Student brings Australian Bearded Dragons to Macleans College

Year 9 and 10 Science students had two special visitors in their classes recently thanks to Michelle Mahoney of Hillary House.
They were Australian Bearded Dragons named Watson and Crick. They visited the class as part of the students Biology studies and in particular focused on animal classes and kidney function in desert reptiles.
The students were given explanations on the dragon’s diets, lifespan and other interesting facts about them. For example how their bodies react when they are in water. They are able to inflate their bodies like a life vest which enables them to keep afloat. In addition during the winter their bodily functions slow down but they do not hibernate but they go into a state of brunation which means their bodies react to change in terms of temperature.
