The Macleans College Climbing team made a strong start in the Auckland College Climbing Series, competing in the first of four events at major climbing gyms across Auckland.
Nineteen students showcased their skills at Extreme Edge, with many newcomers experiencing their first-ever climbing competition.
Among the highlights, Macleans College had six finalists who finished within the top eight of their respective age and gender categories; earning them spots in the finals. The Senior Boys’ category saw fierce competition with 57 climbers vying for podium positions. Cullen Campbell (Batten House) stood out, claiming first place in the finals with impressive strength and composure. Joshua Campbell (Batten) also performed admirably, securing sixth place overall. Louis Li (Mansfield) and Klaas Kamp (Kupe) narrowly missed the finals, tying for ninth place, while William Lockhart (Kupe) was also only a few spots off at 13th place.
Special recognition goes to first-time finalists Jasmine Hu (Mansfield), who secured sixth place, and Doreen Li (Rutherford), claiming eighth place in the Senior Girls category. Additionally, Eric Shen (Hillary), a Year 9 student, made an impressive debut in the finals, finishing in eighth place.
The school shield, awarded at the series' end, is determined by totaling the scores of the top three climbers from each school. Thanks to the impressive achievements of Jasmine Hu, Joshua Campbell and Cullen Campbell, Macleans College is currently tied with Baradene College for second place. Glendowie College holds first place, with Westlake Girls High School in third.
