Spanish language students enjoy annual debating competition
Posted on July 14, 2022
During the last week of Term 2, 12 Spanish language students entered the annual Auckland Spanish Debating Competition held by the Spanish Teachers’ Association (STANZA).
This year, students gathered at Auckland Grammar School to debate a wide range of topics - from whether or not students should be able to choose their school subjects, to whether or not the government should be investing in Space exploration. Students even had the opportunity to debate about vaccine mandates - a topic very relevant to New Zealand today.
The competition was an opportunity for students to put their Spanish knowledge to use and to practice their language with other Auckland Spanish language students.
The Macleans College junior and senior teams both came up against some fierce competition. With only 45 minutes of preparation time, students had to debate entirely in Spanish in front of teachers and their peers.
Congratulations to Picou Spankie (Te Kanawa House), Lydia Anderson (Mansfield), Annabelle Harrison (Snell), Hank He (Rutherford), Nicole Reardon (Te Kanawa), Leon Pollyn (Upham), Emily Yuan (Rutherford), Zoe Barrett (Upham), Niccolo Nustrini (Te Kanawa), Stefanie Ho (Batten), Laura McCabe (Snell), and Luiza Possamai (Batten). Despite having the past few years of language learning being disrupted with moves to online learning, these students still performed at an impressive level.
