Spanish Fun Day 2024
Posted on July 22, 2024
Junior Spanish students at Macleans College recently spent an afternoon exploring aspects of Spanish culture.
Year 9 and 10 students of Spanish gathered in the auditorium for a range of fun, cultural-based activities.
Students participated in some Spanish aerobics to kick off the afternoon. This was followed by a presentation from three Year 11 students who shared their experiences from the recent school trip to Spain. Junior students were curious to hear about the trip and see photos from the students’ travels.
The students' cultural knowledge was then tested in a Spanish quiz and finally they participated in a flamenco dance lesson. Flamenco is a style of music and dance which originated in Andalusia in southern Spain, however, has roots in Moorish musical traditions. It is comprised of four elements: cante (singing), toque (the percussive style of guitar playing), dancing and palmas (percussive hand clapping).

Students participated enthusiastically as they learned the origins of this dance, undertook clapping exercises, played castanets, learned encouraging calls that an audience typically makes for flamenco performers and also learned some basic steps.
