The Macleans College Concert Band made the arduous bus journey to Napier last week to compete at the National Concert Band Championships.
With a very strong final build up to the competition the band took to the stage with confidence. A challenging acoustic provided a real learning experience for the band, as they presented major works; The Witch and the Saint by Steven Reineke and Atlas by William Palange, together with Peter Graham’s beautiful setting of Swedish Folk Song.
The band gained a silver award for their efforts and now look to improve on their performance programme at the KBB music festival next week.
Soloists Nancy Chen of Rutherford House (Flute) and Iris Wu of Mansfield (Oboe) also represented the college in the solo events, before combining with Tomomi Lio of Kupe (Piano) in the ensemble category. All three performances also gained silver awards from the Royal New Zealand Air Force adjudicators.
