The three winners of the year 11 – 13 Senior Speech Contest went on holiday a happy bunch. Rahil John (Kupe House) took out the honours at Year 11 while Helen Wu (Te Kanawa) won the Year 12 title, with Catherin Chen (Batten) moving to the top in Year 13.
“This was one of most hotly contested contests in my time at the College, said organiser Mr Russell Goldsworthy.” There were nine contestants in the preliminaries in both Year 11 and 13, while a stunning eighteen took up the challenge at Year 12. We had to hold the preliminaries over two days.”
Topics were wide and varied, though at Year 12 they are limited to questions about leadership, as the contestants prepare for possible leadership roles in Year 13. The topics at years 11 and 13 are more varied, ranging from ‘A real problem in society is…’ and how they would solve it, to ‘Trial by media should be controlled’.
Other finalists included: Year 13: Elisa Martin Moses (Hillary) and Emma Sproul (Te Kanawa). Year 12: Harrison Roper (Mansfield) and Jason Liu (Mansfield). Year 11: Yishan Jin (Kupe) and Judd Zhan (Snell).
