Senior ESOL Trip to Chelsea Sugar Refinery

Posted on August 12, 2020

The senior students of Macleans College ESOL Immersion programme and their teachers enjoyed a trip to the Chelsea Sugar Refinery on Wednesday 5 August.

The students took part in three activities.  The first being a factory tour by train where they observed the production of many Chelsea Sugar products.  Displays and videos presented along the way explained the many processes required before the products appear in the supermarket. The students enjoyed samples of honey and maple syrup at the end of the tour.

The Interactive Room allowed students to experience virtual baking, and complete puzzles and worksheets.  While here, students also researched the history of the factory and its products.

Each group had a session in the purpose built kitchen where they baked yo-yo biscuits under the guidance of the resident pastry chef. The kitchen facilities are of a high standard and the students took much pride in taking home their edible goods.

Taking part in outside activities such as visiting the Chelsea Sugar Refinery enhances the language growth and subject knowledge of ESOL students.  This trip was of particular relevance to the ESOL Business Studies programme.

The Chelsea Sugar Refinery provides an excellent educational experience.  The day was thoroughly enjoyed by all.
