Second Year for Macleans College Top Two
Posted on June 13, 2016
For the second year in a row, students from Macleans College have taken both 1st and 2nd place in the Lions Club Young Speechmaker Contest Auckland Regional Final. Helen Wu, 12DUT and Catherin Chen, 13DXB topped the list of talented speakers.
As a result, Helen will travel to Wellington in August to compete in the national final. In her speech Helen discussed how hope is the bread and butter of leadership, including most politicians, while Catherin spoke of the importance of balancing humility and confidence.
The Lions Young Speechmaker competition is a national competition involving speakers from around the country. The student presents a prepared speech of five to six minutes as well as an impromptu speech. This year’s impromptu topic was ‘yesterday’’. Contestants are given the word and one minute to prepare before attempting to speak for two minutes on the topic.
Helen and Catherin were sponsored by the Bucklands Beach Lions Club. Helen will also have the opportunity to attend the Lions International Camp after Christmas in Rotorua.
Mr Michael Green, the Speaking Coach, added, “It was a highly contested competition and these two were only separated by a few points – the impromptu might have swung it over to Helen. A real honour to work with Catherin and Helen, and all the speakers this year.”
