Macleans College students place second in Programming Competition for Girls

Posted on November 18, 2024

Macleans College proudly sent two teams to participate in the Programming Competition for Girls (PC4G), a nationwide event designed to inspire and encourage Year 9 and 10 girls to explore the world of programming.

This beginner-friendly competition drew 50 teams from across the country and was held simultaneously across five different locations – The University of Auckland, University of Waikato, University of Otago, University of Canterbury and Tauranga.

The Macleans College team consisted of two duos: Emilia He (Mansfield House) and Sophia Kong (Hillary), and Yixin Zhang (Snell) and Katherine Zuo (Upham).

Participants were challenged with 12 problems of varying difficulty and two hours to come to a solution.

Congratulations to Emilia He and Sophia Kong, who secured second place. Alongside other teams who finished in the top six, they have been invited to a training camp hosted by the New Zealand Olympiad in Informatics (NZOI). The NZOI paves the way for international competitions such as the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI) and the European Girls Olympiad in Informatics (EGOI).

Macleans College applauds all the participants on their outstanding efforts and their contributions towards bridging the gender gap in the field of computer science.
