Stephen Liu, Year 12 student from Mansfield House recently travelled to the USA in order to play in three golf tournaments.
Stephen aspires to play college golf in the USA and this trip was to gain exposure to college coaches, by competing in AJGA events.
The first tournament he played in was the AJGA Junior Open at Palouse Ridge. Stephen shot rounds of 73, 71, 70 (+1) in the event to finish in 8th position. The following week Stephen played in the AJGA Great LIFE Junior Challenge by Sanford Health. His three consistent rounds of 2 under par left him in 3rd place.
The final tournament Stephen played on his trip was the AJGA UHY Kansas City Junior. This course was the most challenging out of the three as the rough around the fairways and greens were very thick. Stephen played some great golf and his rounds of 71, 68, 72 (-5) were good enough to win the tournament.
Upon his return to New Zealand and after 14 days of quarantine Stephen participated in the Auckland Secondary School Stroke Play Competition and finished in third place in the Under 19 boys category.
