A team of four riders travelled last weekend to the National Equestrian Centre in Taupo to compete in the North Island Secondary Schools Horse Trials.
The team was made up of Sam Keane (Batten House) riding Xena XP, Hayley Newington (Hillary) riding Springvale Optimist, Charlotte Owen (Snell) riding Sweet Indiana and Kate McKeen (Hillary) riding The Ice Knight.
Horse Trial events test riders over three phases of different disciplines: dressage, show jumping and cross-country.
The Macleans College team was entered in the 80cm height level of the competition and came away with excellent team results, placing second in the dressage phase, only finishing 0.75 points off the winning team, and third overall in their division.
Sam Keane and Hayley Newington individually placed fourth and fifth respectively within the division. Sam also produced double clear rounds with no jumping faults in either the show jumping or cross-country phases.
