Red carpet rolled out for the inaugural Macademy Awards

The inaugural Macademy Awards celebrated filmmaking at Macleans College with 16 diverse student films showcased.

The sold out event literally rolled out the red carpet with arrivals greeted by the flashes of the paparazzi, as well as mocktails and popcorn.

The first film of the night was a surprise teacher made film starring the staff of Macleans College. The comical film featured the media teachers interrogating their colleagues for the whereabouts of the ‘stolen’ Macademy Award trophies, and featured explosions, laser beams and Mr Hargreaves’ evil twin.

The 16 student films were judged by three artists from the NZ film industry: Nahyeon Lee (writer/director: Kainga), Keagan Carr Fransch (actress: Pete’s Dragon) and Tom Clarke (actor: Punch).

Congratulations to:

  • Best Film: ‘Viral’ by Erica O’Neill (Upham House), Phoebe James (Upham) and Troy Telfer (Rutherford)
  • Best Director: ‘Masked Envy’ by Will Crozier (Upham)
  • Best Script: ‘Perfect’ by Ruby Allcott (Snell)
  • Best Performance: Ashley Harnett (Batten) for her performance in ‘Wigalicious & the Band
  • Best Cinematography: ‘Viral’ by Erica O’Neill, Phoebe James and Troy Telfer
  • Best Editing / Sound: ‘Wigalicious and the Band’ by Eleanor Bramwell (Hilary), Ashley Harnett, Ayaan Lakhani (Kupe) and Isobel Robertson-Emmens (Hillary)

In addition to the judges’ awards, an audience choice award was voted for and awarded on the night. The audience ultimately concurred with the judges and the chosen film was again ‘Viral’ by Erica O’Neill, Phoebe James and Troy Telfer.

Films from the evening are gradually being uploaded to the ‘Media At Macleans’ YouTube channel.

Students striving for Macademy Award glory have already begun discussing their ideas for short films to be made in the filmmaking club and media studies classes in 2023.
