Race Unity Speech Competition

Two students from Macleans College, Catherin Chen 13DXB and Khorshed Tarapore 12NCM competed in the semi-finals of the National Race Unity Speech Competition over the weekend.
“This was one of the toughest competitions I have ever seen,” said Speaking Coach Mr Green. “Without a doubt, it was a pleasure to see so many excellent speeches, with so many different styles of speaking. Outstanding, and our students brought pride to themselves and the school.”
Though unable to reach the final six, the speakers spoke confidently on this year’s topic, ‘Stand up for race unity - Don’t be a bystander.’
The Race Unity Speech Awards were initiated by the New Zealand Bahá’í Community in 2001 in support of Race Relations Day (21 March). The New Zealand Police have been the principal sponsors since 2008, with other very welcome sponsorship coming from the Human Rights Commission, the Hedi Moani Charitable Trust, and the Office of Ethnic Communities. The NZ Federation of Multicultural Councils also provides valuable support.
