Posted on June 01, 2021

On Friday 21 May, nine Macleans College students competed in one of Aotearoa’s biggest Te Reo Māori school sporting events.

Sharing the netball courts with over 740 passionate young Māori speakers, the mixed team played in the Puni Reo Poitarawhiti (Māori Language Netball Tournament) which aims to restore and revive the advancement of indigenous culture and language.

The event created an atmosphere of kotahitanga and manaakitanga, surrounding players in a safe and competitive environment to speak and express the Māori culture and promote the use of te reo Māori outside the classroom.

Throughout the tournament, the team played three games of netball with one common rule to only speak te reo Māori by all players and coaches.
