Problem solving at 2021 Engineering Science Competition
Posted on August 23, 2021
Earlier this month nine Macleans College teams competed in the 2021 Engineering Science Competition.
The students were given the following question at 10.00 am. “How many 1 in 100 year extreme weather events can New Zealand expect to experience over the course of the next decade?”
They had to submit their replies within eight hours. This involved a great deal of research and mathematical modelling. The teams were not permitted to interact with each other, however individuals were encouraged to problem solve together and submit a report (maximum of 10 pages) by 6.00 pm.
The students enjoyed the challenge of solving a problem while working together in a small group for a period of time beyond the typical classroom timeframe of an hour.
