Pre-season hockey success for Macleans College

Posted on May 02, 2023

At the end of Term 1, both the Boys and Girls 1st XI Hockey teams were fortunate to have the opportunity to attend a pre-season tournament in Rotorua.

This tournament helped immensely to bond the teams so that they could start the season as a cohesive unit. The students also obtained some great game practice against some competitive teams.

The Girls 1st XI Hockey team started their tournament with a win against Westlake Girls’ High School. The team lost the next three games against Kristin School, John Paul College and Western Heights High School by close margins. The girls managed to correct their mistakes to win on the final day in a rematch against Western Heights High School for third place.

With a reasonably new team this season, the tournament provided a chance for the new players to gain confidence before the season begins and to develop the best systems that work for all members. The team are extremely grateful to the coaches, Miss Uden and Ms Eisenhut as well as manager, Ms Connolly, for making this experience possible. The girls feel well prepared, individually and as a team, for an exciting season ahead.

The tournament for the Boys 1st XI Hockey team proved to be very successful, as they progressed undefeated to take out first place after victories against Hora Hora School, Western Heights High School, and Gisborne Boys’ High School. The following day the team won the final against Hora Hora School.

The boys found the tournament was essential to learn their playing style, and allowed new players to bond with the rest of the team. They adapted well and enjoyed competing against teams they have not played before. The team will take their learnings into the season, where hopefully they can experience the same success. Thank you to coaches Ivo and Margie, and to manager Mrs Brownsey for organising and managing the trip.
