Outstanding Success in NZ Economics Competition

Eleven of the 27 students who entered received High Distinction, placing them in the top 5% of the country.

2,697 students from 90 schools entered this national competition which is run by the University of Auckland Business School and consists of 40 multiple choice questions that test both economic theory and general knowledge of current economic issues. It is supported by the Kelliher Economics Foundation, which was setup by Sir Henry Kelliher with the aim of “extending the knowledge of young New Zealanders in the importance of the economics of money and banking”.

Students with extremely meritorious performances, placing in the top 20 of their respective year groups are in Division Two, Yang Fan Yun (Snell House) 12th, and Vincent Wang (Mansfield) 9th, and in Division One, Benjamin Payne (Snell) 13th, and Shaun Wee (Batten) 5th.

Lucas Lee (Hillary) and Zachary Wong (Batten) placed 1st equal in the Division One category, earning them the title of National Winner. They will receive a cash prize, which in previous years has been up to $500. This is an extremely notable performance by Zachary, as it is his third consecutive year as a National Winner of the competition.
