Outdoor Education students take the plunge into scuba diving
Posted on May 20, 2022
Towards the end of term one the two Year 13 Outdoor Education classes participated in two scuba diving training sessions at the Ōtāhuhu Pool and Leisure Centre which has a three-metre diving pool perfect for training.
With only a handful of students who had actually dived before it was a truly exciting and at times challenging learning experience for all including the teachers.
These sessions were vital for the classes in providing key skills in scuba and increasing the confidence levels in each student. Once the nerves had settled and everyone got use to breathing through their mouths rather than their noses the sessions flowed easily. Some students excelled and took to scuba like a fish to water!
Key skills learnt throughout included how to setup the buoyancy control device (BCD), communication underwater, regulator recovery, clearing a flooded mask, a blind swim, controlling your buoyancy and how to descend and ascend correctly.
The students and teachers walked away confident of taking the next big step in their scuba journey that of actually diving into the ocean.
