Outdoor Education students attend scuba and surf camp

In the last week of term one the two Year 13 Outdoor Education classes took part in a three day camp at Tawharanui Regional Park.

The classes were accompanied by teachers Mr Watson, Mrs Marnewick and Mr Cole. This was an exciting opportunity for the classes to experience camping, cooking for themselves and to cement class relationships.

While on camp students took part in a range of activities including mountain biking, surfing and paddle boarding. Surfing at Omaha proved to be the favourite activity with the students and teachers thoroughly enjoying the chance to catch a wave!

The major element of the camp was the completion of the scuba course with an ocean dive at Goat Island which is a marine reserve full of amazing sea life. The students were keen to get into the ocean and get up close with the sea life. They were able to swim with snapper and even a sting ray while completing their Practical Achievement Standard.

There were plenty of laughs on the camp and lots of learning too. The students had an amazing time and made great memories. Even Cyclone Fili could not dampen the spirits of the students and they managed to survive a night filled with wind, rain and a few collapsed tents.

Overall, the camp was a success and showcased the opportunities and learning that that can be had in Outdoor Education at Macleans College.
