North Island Secondary Schools Snowboard Championship

Approximately 200 students competed in the North Island Secondary Schools Snowboard Championships from September 25 - 27 at the Turoa Skifields, Mt Ruapehu.

The first day of competition was Dual Slalom and Slope Style. Dual slalom was on a slick hard packed course with many riders not completing their runs. Macleans College had an outstanding result, with Angus Jones (Te Kanawa House) 2.5 seconds clear of the field to win the event and Trent Hunt (Te Kanawa) and James Du Plessis (Snell) both recovering from falls to complete the course and get valuable points for the team. The team also did very well in Slope Style with Angus 5th, Tom Subritzky (Batten) 14th and James 21st in qualifying.

Day two was spent off the mountain due to inclement weather and the boys visited the Tangiwai Memorial and the Waiouru Army Museum.

Day three saw the Slope Style finals and Boarder Cross, with Angus making the Boarder Cross semi-finals and Trent making the quarter-finals with some good aggressive riding. Although the team just missed out on a podium finish the boys were proud of their efforts.
