New Zealand Young Physicists Tournament

Posted on March 20, 2019

On Saturday 9 March, a Macleans College team competed in the New Zealand Young Physicists Tournament (NZYPT) Regionals and have since been invited to the National Final on 23 March.

The team, consisting of Elizabeth Koh, Isabel Li, and Zachary Yan, all Year 13 from Upham House, were challenged to present and defend their solutions to complex physics questions. In preparation for the competition, the team was required to devise solutions to seven pre-proposed questions through rigorous experimentation and in-depth research. With subjects ranging from a newton’s cradle to a gyroscopic teslameter, the students were challenged with the task of investigating a wide range of advanced physics phenomena.

On competition day, the team participated in three ‘Physics Fights’, taking on the roles of reporting their solutions as well as opposing other teams. The students demonstrated confidence in their presentations and quick-thinking skills as the opposition. Overall, the team placed 8th in the NZYPT regionals and have been invited to the National Final later this month.

The team would like to thank Mr Wong for his dedication and support in all stages of the competition. Many thanks also goes to Nicholas Yao (Upham) who greatly contributed to research and experimentation
