New Zealand Chinese Language Week 2022
Posted on October 11, 2022
In the last week of Term 3, Macleans College successfully celebrated New Zealand Chinese Language week for the first time.
你好!
New Zealand Chinese Language Week is designed to increase Chinese language learning in New Zealand, and seeks to bridge the cultural and linguistic knowledge gap between China and New Zealand.
At Macleans College, the week started with a form class video introducing New Zealand Chinese Language Week. In form classes, students enjoyed learning basic Chinese greetings, numbers and playing Kahoot learning games of Chinese cultural knowledge.
Different activities were organised during lunchtime throughout the week. To celebrate National Dumpling Day on Monday 26 September, the dumpling making challenge was held during the week. Students and staff made their own best dumplings and took pictures of them. The participants were given cultural gifts and treats. The Chinese riddle and tongue twister competition was held during lunchtime on Tuesday. Students enjoyed the challenges and treats with peers.
The Chinese Girls Dance Group and Lion Dance Group performed during lunchtimes in the school amphitheatre on Wednesday and Thursday. The Chinese Girls Dance Group performed traditional Chinese long sleeve dance with Dunhuang dance movements. Dunhuang dance draws inspiration from the body movements in the Dunhuang grotto frescoes. The Lion Dance performed with cymbals and drums. In Chinese culture, the lion represents power and wisdom. People perform lion dances at Chinese festivals and big occasions to bring prosperity and good luck. The noise of cymbals and drums can chase away evil spirits.
Many thanks to all the students and staff who helped and participated in the events. Thank you to the Chinese Girls Dance Group (led by Elva Wang of Kupe House and April Peng of Rutherford) and Lion Dance Group (led by Gladys Chua of Rutherford) for their fantastic performances.
谢谢!
