In the first few weeks of 2016, music students have been fighting it out through auditions for the top spots in Macleans music groups. The standard for a high school is exceptional. The majority of the Symphony Orchestra Violin section is made up of young musicians at Grade 8 standard or above. This is represented throughout the range of music making and is not just confined to the Orchestra. Many Woodwind, Brass, Voice and Piano students are at the top of the grade system and creating some outstanding music.

Keeping this music tradition alive and enhancing the number of students taking up instrumental and vocal studies is an immediate goal for the Director of Performance Music Mr Steve Miles who comes to Macleans College after spending recent years engaged in music research and teaching at the University of Otago and working as a Musical Director and Director for Musical Theatre productions. Mr Miles first came to New Zealand upon invitation from his predecessor, Mr Nigel Weeks to work with the Dalewool Auckland Brass Band in 2003. Shortly after, Mr Miles was appointed as Director of the Southern Brass Academy in Dunedin where he has been based for the past 10 years, after a fixed term contract teaching on the island of Bermuda.
