More success for Macleans College Golfers
Posted on November 06, 2020
Last week Auckland Golf stroke play and match play was held at Howick Golf Course.
Last year’s Captain, Jimmy Zheng (Hillary House 2015 – 2019) and four current students took part in this competition.
Friday 30 October was the stroke play day. This was played over 36 holes. Jimmy returned unbeatable score cards of 66 (3 under) in the morning session and 63 (6 under) in the afternoon session to claim the trophy on his home turf. Not too far behind was Jae Na, Year 12 student from Mansfield House. He returned score cards of 67 and 68 to claim the third position. Another student from Mansfield, Stephen Liu played very well on Friday recording a score of 68 and 71 over the two rounds to claim the sixth position.
The top sixteen players from Friday’s competition qualified for the Auckland Match Play Competition. Match play is a knock out competition. Jimmy, Jae and Stephen won both their matches on Saturday to qualify for the semi-final on Sunday. Jimmy and Jae won their semi-finals whereas Stephen came second in his match.
The final was between the former Macleans College Captain Jimmy against the current Macleans College Premier team player Jae. Jimmy’s experience and home course knowledge was just enough to win the Auckland Golf Match play. In the meanwhile, Stephen put in a decent final round to win third place.
Jessica Huang (Batten) and Sally Lee (Upham) participated in the Ladies Division. Jessica came sixth and qualified for the match play. Unfortunately Jessica did not get any rhythm in her swing during match play and lost the quarter final.
