Model United Nations Assembly 2021

Posted on June 15, 2021

Twelve senior students from Macleans College recently attended the Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), run by the Rotary Club at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School.

Over 300 students across Auckland and Northland participated, representing a total of 100 countries from Asia Pacific, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, Eastern Europe, and Western Europe.

Teams were required to put forth their respective country’s beliefs and argue with their nation’s best interests in mind. The students debated over remits and amendments to substantial and relevant global issues, involving the fair global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines, the protection of women’s rights, expansion of aid for the world food programme, terminating the use of landmines, and regulating those not involved in the reduction of carbon emissions.

Over the course of the two days, delegates from Macleans College learnt how to lobby, negotiate, and engage in impromptu political debates in order to achieve their nations’ respective goals and objectives.

Among the topics set out by the remits, various other issues arose in discussion, both in country blocs and as a complete assembly. These ranged from how to handle the Rohingya refugee crisis, to the validity of censorship of a country’s press and media outlets by the government. Regional discussions and a final impromptu debate proved to be exciting opportunities for a realistic simulation and critical analysis of how countries in the United Nations negotiate and interact with one another in the present day political climate.

The students involved were Annika Lee (Snell House), Wei Tian Teo (Rutherford), Shivani Samanthula (Mansfield) representing Mongolia; Allan Han (Batten), Vian Shah (Snell), Shafquat Tabeeb (Mansfield) representing Colombia; Eric Deng (Mansfield), Benson Jin (Mansfield), Karylle Soriano (Batten) representing United Kingdom; and Abhinav Chawla (Snell), Wayne Gao (Snell), Rick Han (Snell) representing Armenia.

Many thanks to Mrs Coventry for helping to organise the event.
