Model United Nations Assembly 2019

Twelve senior students from Macleans College recently attended the Rotary Club organised Model United Nations Assembly (MUNA), held at Auckland Girls’ Grammar School from 17-18 May.

Many students across Auckland and Northland were involved, representing over 100 countries as delegates. Teams were required to put forward their nation’s viewpoints and argue for amendments to substantial global issues, involving internet regulation policies, climate change consequence and funding, and parameters against racism and hate speech.

Throughout the two-day debate, various other issues arose, which were discussed in smaller groups of countries, geographically arranged. These included how to protect member states from extreme nationalist groups, increasing censorship in journalism, and discussing trade agreements. All this provided ample opportunity for realistic immersion and consideration of how nations politically interact.

The delegates from Macleans College, well supported by Mrs Coventry, proudly represented Bosnia Herzegovina, Finland, Singapore and the UK, learning how to lobby, negotiate and compromise to effectively achieve the goals of their nations.

The students involved were Abhinav Chawla (Snell House), Darsh Chaudhari (Batten), Ranudi Lelwala (Hillary), Jessica Gu (Upham), Zi Lin Wang (Rutherford), Carey Lin (Upham), Daniela Romero Mittelstaedt (Snell), Ellen Wang (Snell), Annika Lee (Snell), Daniel Ahn (Batten), Rick Han (Snell) and Jimmy Zhou (Batten).
