Over 500 students descended into the Macleans College gymnasium on Tuesday 2 May to experience the energy, enthusiasm, and expertise of one of New Zealand’s top stage and screen actors, Michael Hurst, delivering an incredible breakdown of drama, and Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Beloved actor, Michael Hurst, is easily one of New Zealand’s most notable experts on acting, directing and Shakespearean plays and about to launch into a season of the classic tragedy King Lear in June this year. Through the school’s connection with the Auckland Theatre Company, Macleans College managed to secure the opportunity to have him present a masterclass on all things drama.

Speaking on everything from his own career to the rhythmic nuances of Shakespeare’s language, Hurst held the attention of the Year 10s for nearly two hours. His remarkable knowledge and experience in front of a large group coming through clearly.

Students took away a clear understanding of Shakespeare’s work, and were reminded why it is vital that we still teach the greatest writer of all time, ‘Because he is the best’.
