Media studies students discover career opportunities

Senior media studies students were delighted to be visited by Alice Rae-Flick from the New Zealand Broadcasting School (NZBS) in Christchurch.
Alice’s visit came the morning after the NZ Radio & Podcasting Awards held in Auckland. Each senior media studies class received an engaging talk about careers in the media space and an introduction to what it is like to study media at NZBS.
One question the students posed was about the job prospects in the media environment post-school - an understandable concern given the cuts to TVNZ and collapse of Newshub. Alice reported from the front line that while the headlines might be suggesting doom and gloom, the reality is the industry is fracturing with the opportunities remaining strong. Visual storytelling is in hot demand and people with skills in media production can land jobs in all sorts of places due to the huge demand for media content. Alongside this the emerging podcasting industry continues to build. NZBS reports that 92% of graduates land jobs in the industry.
Students had many questions and valued the opportunity to consider their future options. This was also a brilliant opportunity to build the school’s connection with a leading tertiary organisation.
