Media Studies students challenge journalists

Year 12 Media Studies students have been engaging in a unit on news media ethics and have recently had Q&As with two journalists.
Hayden Donnell, one of the hosts of Radio New Zealand’s MediaWatch visited in person, and Marc Daalder, a senior reporter from Newsroom spoke to the students via zoom.
The focus for the students has been how the media reports on climate change. Hayden helped them to understand the history of journalistic balance, and how this led to reporters representing arguments for and against climate change out of proportion to the actual evidence. Marc spoke about the idea that all journalists are climate change reporters because climate change impacts every area of the newsroom - from transport to sport.
The students grilled both guests with challenging questions about how journalists should be addressing this important issue. It was a special opportunity for the students to hear from these professionals, and we thank them for their time and sharing their expertise.
