Medals at New Zealand National Cadet (U17) Championships

The New Zealand National Cadet (U17) Championships were held in Christchurch over the three days immediately before ANZAC Day. The event played host to over 120 entries, with participants from across New Zealand.
Michael Purcell, 13ROOK, went into the competition with a National U17 ranking of 4th for Foil and 1st for Sabre. Michael narrowly lost 15 – 13 to a fellow Auckland fencer in the semi-finals to be placed 3rd= in the Foil event and take home a Bronze medal.
The following day Michael was keen to improve on his second place in the Sabre competition from 2016. After a minor hiccup in the ranking round, Michael refocused and went on to comfortably win in the finals and take away a Gold medal.
These results will help cement Michael’s high national ranking in both disciplines and support his bid to be selected for the New Zealand Team to compete in the Australian National Cadet (U17) Championship in Perth later in the year.
