Posted on July 29, 2022
Thirty-five students across all year groups from Macleans College qualified for the New Zealand Physics and Mathematics Competition (NZPMC) North Island finals day, which were held at Auckland University during the school holidays on Monday 11 July.
To qualify for finals day meant that the students were in the top 1% of all students in New Zealand who participated in the initial competition. The Macleans College group was by far the largest at the event.
The students continued to perform at the very highest level in the competition, and achieved some excellent results. In the Junior competition (covering Years 9 to 11), Jay Zhao (Year 10 Rutherford House) came joint sixth overall, and Raymond Zhang (Year 11 Te Kanawa House) came joint second overall to take a silver medal.
In the Senior Competition, William Gao (Year 13 Upham House) came third overall to win the bronze medal, and Ibrahim Waheed (Year 13 Batten House) came second overall to take the silver medal.
The day also saw high-level presentations from Auckland University staff, and laboratory tours and research talks from PhD students in the Science Faculty at the University.
Congratulations to all involved with the competition, which was organised and run by Mr Wong and Dr Grose.
