MCert Drama and Music students collaborate

A group of MCert drama and music students set off to Q Theatre on Queen Street to watch Dakota of the White Flats by New Zealand based and internationally renowned Red Leap Theatre Company.

Two weeks prior to the theatre trip, these students had enjoyed a full day workshop with the same theatre company where they physically explored the conventions, skills and magic of Devised Theatre creation. After this workshop, combined with weeks of knowledge-rich curriculum taught by Drama teachers Miss Burnett and Mrs Harrison and Music teacher Miss Xie, the drama and music students were able to watch Red Leap Theatre perform a professional and exhilarating version of what they are learning in class.

"Dakota of the White Flats is an adaptation of the novel by award-winning author Philip Ridley. A high-action pulpy punk noir that snatches the classic coming-of-age adventure story out of the hands of a gang of boys, and passes it to two loud, unapologetic, brave young women.

Delivered in electronica inflected neon and grime, Dakota of the White Flats is a finely crafted narrative shot through with comedy, horror, immersive soundscape and live music. Directed by Ella Becroft, with set design by John Verryt, lighting by Rachel Marlow and composition by Eden Mulholland, this fast-paced and electrifying show celebrates the resilience, bravery and hope of young people in a changing world.” - Red Leap

This extremely important piece of theatre has provided an inspired example to the drama and music students on their journey to creating original Devised Theatre performances accompanied by original music compositions. The students will work together to create a cross-curriculum collaboration between the Music and Drama departments which will be showcased at the end of Term 3 to a live audience in the auditorium.
