Mathex Competition 2020
Posted on October 30, 2020
Since March, fifty excited Year 9’s and 10’s have been practising their skills at Mathex every Wednesday morning.
With great fanfare, 20 students were selected (two teams from each of Years 9 and 10) to represent Macleans College at the annual Mathex Competition, held at Barfoot Stadium in Kohimarama.
A new date of Wednesday 28 October was organised for the competition following the events of COVID-19. The teams were reconstituted, and an enthused ensemble met timeously for this year’s event.
Macleans College teams did very well. In the Year 9 Category, one hundred teams participated. The Year 9 A-team emerged as the overall winners, and the B-team came 5th. The A-team brought home the trophy and finished the competition in a very impressive 20 minutes. Each member won the latest Casio graphix calculator and a $50 voucher from Westfield.
The A-team are Raymond Zhang (Te Kanawa), Yixue Wang (Mansfield), Andrew Chen (Te Kanawa) and Jesse Zhang (Te Kanawa). The B-team are Joseph Tan (Te Kanawa), Tianzexi Liu (Snell), Emily Yin (Te Kanawa), and Jason Zhou (Te Kanawa). The Year 9 reserves were Ivan Yun (Te Kanawa) and Naomi Cheng (Te Kanawa).
The Year 10 teams participated with about 90 other teams. Overall the B-team finished 3rd, and each member won a $50 voucher from Westfield. They were beaten to the post by St Kentigern College and Botany Downs Secondary College. Only these three teams finished the competition in the allotted time. The A-team scored an impressive 85 points out of 100, but did not finish in time.
The B-team are Olivia Lin (Batten), Melinda Shao (Hillary), Joshua Yee (Batten), and Matthew Shih (Batten). The A-team are Allan Han (Batten), Valerie Lau (Batten), Ryan Dukeson (Hillary) and Oscar Boehme (Batten). The Year 10 reserves are Stephen He (Batten) and Benny Tan (Snell).
A big thank you goes out the Mathex committee for all their hard work and enthusiasm. They are not just able trainers, but wonderful motivators, too. Darsh Chaudhari (Batten), Abhinav Chawla (Snell) and Ellen Wang (Snell) lead the pack of trainers: James Hui (Rutherford), Terry Shen (Te Kanawa), Wei Tian Teo (Rutherford), and Sanjit Ramesh Chandran (Hillary).
