Macleans College and Whangarei Boys’ High School have been selected as the two New Zealand teams to work through a problem set for the 2017 International Mathematics Modelling Challenge which was held over a five day period during the Easter holiday.
The team of four Year 12 students included Sashi Peiris (Kupe), Owen Wang (Kupe), Allen Hui (Kupe) and Yang Fan Yun (Snell) had five full days to complete a problem about holding an international conference with regard to jet-lag and ambient temperature.
The competition was open to any group of four students in New Zealand and the solutions from the two best entries in the country have been entered into the international competition. The papers will be judged by the international expert panel in early June and the winners announced by late June. Papers will be designated as Outstanding, Meritorious, Honourable Mention and Successful Participant with appropriate plaques and certificates given in the name of students, their advisor and their schools.
Another success for the Mathematics Department was William Han, Year 11 (Upham) being selected to represent New Zealand at the 58th International Mathematical Olympiad to be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July 2017.
During May he was involved in the Auckland Mathematical Olympiad, a competition run by the University of Auckland, where he came 1st in the Junior Section.
