Macleans Wins International Title in Business Case Competition

A Macleans team has taken out a trans-Tasman head to head battle of national championships.

Representing New Zealand after winning the New Zealand Schools Case Competition, a team from Macleans College has won an international title. The head to head battle pitted the team against a team from the Queensland Academy of Science Mathematics and Technology which was Australia’s top performing IB exclusive school in 2015.

In the head to head battle, the students had just five hours to prepare recommendations on how the Lotus F1 Racing team could cope with the disruptive changes that affected the F1 industry in 2013. The students were required to present their recommendations in a 10 minute presentation followed by a 10 minute Q and A session with the judges.

The team, consisting of Benjamin Payne (Snell House), Catherin Chen (Batten), Charlene Lo (Batten) and Zachary Wong (Batten), receive an all-expenses paid three day trip to Brisbane and $500 for the school.

The three person judging panel was made of alumni from case programmes in Auckland, Queensland and Melbourne and included a Project Manager at BHP Billiton and a Consultant at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Zurich. The panel was extremely praiseworthy of the team’s performance, which they said could have been delivered by experienced university students.

The team received coaching from students from the University of Auckland Management Case Consulting Club prior to going away. In Brisbane, the team was supported and assisted by commerce teacher Jacob Samuel and University of Auckland staff member Olivia Flack.
