Six Macleans students performed at Auckland Central Library on Thursday 13 October during the Library’s lunch time concert series.
A capacity audience were captivated by the virtuosity and musicianship of the students from start to finish.
Opening the programme with the 1st movement of Beethoven’s Sonata no.8 (Pathetique) Year 9 David Li (Snell House), showed the audience why he was the winner of the 2016 Junior Piano competition as he performed the demanding work from memory.
Year 10 student Hayatt Al Joborry (Mansfield) followed, with the first of two sets that had the audience nodding and nearly singing along to well known melodies such as A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square and I Feel Pretty.
Yuna Otani (Batten), also Year 10, performed a fantasy on the music of Giuseppi Verdi’s La Traviata with a clear and crip virtuosity.
A change of mood was offered by Year 9 Miles Boermans (Te Kanawa) with an original composition for Jazz Piano entitled Everytime I Look into Your Eyes.
Year 10 Michael Luo (Mansfield) presented Ten Have’s Allegro Brillante with seeming ease before senior student Tony Chen (Mansfield) displayed a masterclass in Piano performance with his presentation of Kodaly’s Dances of Marosszek.
The challenging work was greeted with a standing ovation from the receptive audience one of whom remarked, “that is the best Piano playing I have ever heard.”
