Macleans College students win at Regional Shakespeare Festival

Mistaken identities and duplicated love letters were just two of the features in this year’s Macleans College entries to the SGCNZ University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival.
Two groups from the school took part in the Auckland South and East Regional Final at Botany Downs Secondary College on Saturday 10 April. Like Lear, they did not let the wind and rain deter them on the day, eager to perform their pieces which were both student directed.
‘The Comedy of Errors’ piece, directed by Sophia Xu (Hillary House) and Emma Zhou (Hillary), explored the hilarity that ensues when two sets of twins are both confused. It helps when you have real identical twins in the cast. This piece impressed the judges and won best 5-minute performance meaning they will now go through to the National Finals in Wellington this June.
‘The Merry Wives of Windsor’, directed by Alyssa Roding (Mansfield), also impressed the judges, winning the title of ‘Great Comedic Ensemble’ for their clever use of word play and slapstick humour.
Students were praised for their resilience and determination, bringing their pieces to the stage despite a very disrupted Term One.
