Macleans College Students Speak to Parliament on Organ Donation

Posted on June 17, 2019

Four Macleans College students recently spoke to the Parliament’s Health Select Committee in their campaign to increase organ donation rates.

The group, comprised of Anna Schwerzel (Kupe House), Nida Khan (Mansfield), Grace Park (Snell) and Justin Hu (Hillary) are currently undertaking an effort to change organ donation laws.

The students appeared before the Health Select Committee via video conference on Wednesday 22 May and spoke in support of the Organ Donors and Related Matters Bill, following its first reading.  During their 10 minute public submission, they spoke with Labour MP David Clark who proposed the Bill, as well as Louisa Wall, the Health Committee Chairperson. The bill is currently supported by both major parties in Parliament.

The students have also discussed their cause with local National Pakuranga MP Simeon Brown, and have developed a strong social media presence in their efforts to raise awareness about the issue by the means of their Facebook Page: Organ Donation Awareness NZ

Their campaign was spurred by a group assignment in their Level 3 Social Studies class, headed by teacher Ms Glass.
